What will you learn?

In this two-day course, instruction will review all the 6.6L applications, starting with the LB7 and ending with the L5P.  In addition, there will be brief discussion of the smaller Duramax, the LM2, LZ0 found in the GM 1500 series pickup trucks. In 2001 marked the start of the use of common rail on the Duramax light-duty diesel pickup, and has evolved with the newer L5P in 2017 using Denso Common Rail Injection.

In the course, we will discuss the various models and subsystems. This includes the cab chassis models and pickup models. The subsystems to be viewed will be:

  • Engine Design and Repair Practices

  • Turbocharger and Intake Systems

  • Open and Closed Crankcase System Variations

  • Exhaust Systems, LMM to L5P Aftertreatment Systems Used.

  • Common Rail Designs, Starting with Bosch LB7 to LML and Denso L5P, LM2, LZ0

  • Cooling System Operation and Diagnosis

Service information used on these products will be shown from Diagnostic Trouble Codes to Repair procedures and wiring schematics. The class will include both older and newer scan tools. Live trucks will be used for diagnostic demonstrations and tests.

About YOur Instructor

Antonio “Tony” Salas has been teaching classes nationwide for over 35 years. He is currently the course instructor for Powertrain Training. He specializes in Light and Medium Duty Diesel applications. His instruction focuses not only on product specifics, but use of diagnostic tools, service information, and critical thinking needed to take on, diagnose, and repair today’s trucks. He has worked as an instructor for General Motors Fleet and ACDelco. Additionally he has done contract training for Motorcraft, Standard Motor Products, Delphi and Independent shops. He is the former training manager for the Association of Diesel Specialists. His knowledge base encompasses diesel and automotive gasoline applications. This includes electronical training and networks. Tony works on automotive, and light- and medium-duty diesel vehicles on a daily basis which enables him to teach up-to-date real life scenarios to help the technician diagnose and repair with more accuracy. As a bilingual (Spanish/English) trainer, he is able to facilitate and provide training in both languages.
