What will you learn?

The original 6.7L Powerstroke, known as the Scorpion motor, was released in 2011 model year for Ford Super Duty and Chassis narrow-frame trucks. Through the years, the powertrain has brought about challenges and diagnostic techniques needed to repair them. What has also evolved has been horsepower and torque. Tony Salas instructor will present an updated two-day training class on subsystems and the newest information on this engine.

Topics will include:

  • Common Rail review and updated testing, issues with injectors and CP4 Pump

  • Turbocharger updates and diagnostics including smoke testing.

  • Engine, issues with oil leaks and discussion on crankcase ventilation (blowby)

  • Engine diagnostics using factory Ford software IDS and aftermarket scan tools.  Also the introduction of FDRS, Fords new diagnostic software

  • We'll review on networks and test your knowledge on CAN and local networks

  • The importance of locating the service manuals and wiring diagrams.  Students will then have DTC case studies.

  • Review the different types of regenerations in the exhaust aftertreatment and cover they system.  Also discuss the operation and causes for premature failures in the exhaust aftertreatment.  

  • Revisit NOx and the NOx sensor system including diagnostics on the sensors.

  • Diagnosis, having a strategy how you diagnose issues.

Students will have a comprehensive training experience with Tony Salas. Training binders will be provided and serve as a guide, covering the topics that Tony will be presenting on. This will help students follow along and have a reference for the material being taught. Worksheets will be provided thought the class aiding to reinforce learning and also provide students with opportunities to practice diagnosing and finding service information.  The focus on scan tools is crucial in modern automotive diagnostics.  Scan tools are indeed the lifeline for technicians, as they provide valuable data and insights into a vehicle's performance and issues. By reviewing different scan tool manufacturers' capabilities and features, students will gain a better understanding of how to utilize these tools effectively.

About Our Instructor

Antonio “Tony” Salas has been teaching classes nationwide for over 35 years. He is currently the course instructor for Powertrain Training. He specializes in Light and Medium Duty Diesel applications. His instruction focuses not only on product specifics, but use of diagnostic tools, service information, and critical thinking needed to take on, diagnose, and repair today’s trucks. He has worked as an instructor for General Motors Fleet and ACDelco. Additionally he has done contract training for Motorcraft, Standard Motor Products, Delphi and Independent shops. He is the former training manager for the Association of Diesel Specialists. His knowledge base encompasses diesel and automotive gasoline applications. This includes electronical training and networks. Tony works on automotive, and light- and medium-duty diesel vehicles on a daily basis which enables him to teach up-to-date real life scenarios to help the technician diagnose and repair with more accuracy. As a bilingual (Spanish/English) trainer, he is able to facilitate and provide training in both languages.
